Message from ICT Office

The ICT Office would like to replace damaged laptop covers. We put together a very short survey so they know how many to purchase . Please take a minute to complete the survey. Once purchased, new covers will be distributed to homerooms before Winter Break.

Once the covers are distributed we will go back to enforcing the policy that all students must use a cover on their school MacBooks so make sure you complete the survey. The survey closes Dec 8th but don't put it off. Do it now! What are you waiting for? Go, go, go!

How do you say … (in English)?

How do you say

Como ya sabrás, esta es la típica pregunta que le hacemos al profesor cuando queremos saber la traducción exacta de una palabra o expresión. Para empezar, a niveles bajos e intermedios, no está mal. Sin embargo, si quieres avanzar en el idioma rápidamente, debes empezar a utilizar otras preguntas.

What is the meaning of … ? / What does … mean?

Estas son otras dos preguntas muy comunes a niveles bajos e intermedios. Significan, literalmente, “¿Cuál es el significado de …?” o “¿Qué significa …?”. Son muy útiles para cuando leemos o escuchamos una palabra que no entendemos. Pero cuidado, es muy común decir “What means …?”, lo cual es completamente incorrecto ya que nos falta el auxiliar “does”.

How do you pronounce … (in English)?

En este caso, no estamos preguntando por el significado de una palabra, sino por la pronunciación. Por ejemplo, puedes saber que “literature” es “literatura”, por la similitud de la escritura, pero puede ser que no sepas pronunciarla. En este caso diríamos: “How do you pronounce “literatura” in English?” o “How do you pronounce this word?”

How do you spell …/it/that?

En muchas ocasiones, cuando el profesor habla o estamos haciendo una actividad de listening, hay palabras que entendemos pero no sabemos escribir. En esos casos podemos preguntar “How do you spell that?”, que quiere decir “¿Cómo se deletrea eso?”. Es especialmente útil si queremos apuntar la palabra para aprendérnosla más adelante.

Excuse me?

excuse me

¿Alguna vez te han hablado y no te has enterado de lo que te han dicho? Nos ha pasado a todos, tanto en inglés como en español. En ese caso, en vez de decir algo como “What did you say? I didn’t understand.”, podemos decir algo más sencillo como “Excuse me?”, que literalmente se traduce como “¿Perdona?”. Además, podemos añadirle algo como “Excuse me? Can you repeat, please?

What is a synonym of ….? / What is the opposite of …?

En ocasiones, y especialmente a niveles más avanzados, nos puede interesar conocer sinónimos y antónimos de una palabra. Así podemos enriquecer nuestro vocabulario para no usar siempre las mismas palabras. Por ejemplo, si quieres saber un sinónimo de “close” podemos decir algo como “What is a synonym of “close”?”

When do we use this word? / Can you use it in a sentence?

¡No te arrepentirás!

Big or little? Ideas for teaching size concepts

We have written posts about teaching other early concepts – colour and prepositions.  But today we are going to think about the early size concepts of big and little.

big-little

Just before I start, there are a couple of points I want to run through. Firstly, there is the choice of words.  Speech Therapists all tend to use big and little.  However, parents and nursery staff often use big and small. It really doesn’t matter which words you use, as long as you stick to the same ones once you have started! Little or small is fine.  However I wouldn’t start with miniscule or huge!

The second point is about how we teach the concepts.  It is seen as best practise to teach one concept at a time.  So you would just teach big and if you need to talk about little, you would call the item not big.  Then you would move onto little.  I personally find that at the point when you are teaching big and little the child often isn’t secure with negatives.  So if you say not big, they won’t understand the not and will find the big item.  You then have no differentiation between big and not big.  As such I teach big and little together.  You can concentrate on one more than the other first, but I would use the words big and little.  You need to make sure that the child understands the concepts first before they will start using them.

Activities

  • Real objects: I start with some real objects – anything you can find with a big and little version.  Lets say you have a big and little teddy.  Put both teddies in front of the child.  Introduce them and say something like – This teddy is big (emphasise the word big and hold your arms out as you say it to give visual support) and this one is little (again emphasise little and hold your fingers up with a small gap between them). Then ask for one of the teddies – “Can I have big teddy”.
  • 2 step instructions.  You can make the above task harder by either adding another set of items or by asking the child to put the teddy on something.  Then the child has to understand the 2 words to correctly follow the instruction.  Be careful not to add too many new elements as you may be making the instruction too hard.  For more information about key words read this post.
  • Use pictures. Once the child understands the concept with real objects, you can move onto pictures.  Make sure that there is a good differences between your big and little pictures. We want it to be obvious to the child which is which.
  • Use books. Children’s books have lots of great examples of big and little characters.  When both are shown on a page ask the child to find either the big or little character.
  • Real life. Remember to use the words in everyday situations.  If you are out walking, you can talk about the big trees or the little birds.  Using the words in context will help secure the child’s understanding of the concepts.

Errors

  • Wrong toy.  When you ask for the big teddy, if the child gives you the other teddy you will need to correct them.  Remember to keep it positive.  Maybe say “Thank you, but this is the little teddy, I want the BIG teddy”.  Remember to praise them when they get it correct.  If they continue to select the wrong teddy, pick up the correct one and name it again.
  • Not listening. Sometimes children will make errors because they aren’t listening or just want to play with the teddies.  In this scenario I would ask the child to listen before giving the instructions and also I would hold the teddies up in front of the child.  This gives you more control over the toys.
  • Make it easier.  If the child is making errors, check how many steps you have put in the instruction.  If they are finding 2 step instructions tricky, take it back to just asking for the big or little teddy.  When they are really secure at this level, you can move on.

What other ways do you teach big and little?

Teaching past tense verbs

Grammar can be very tricky for some children.  This is hardly surprising when you think about it – there are so many rules about how sentences fit together.  A lot of these centre around verbs (action words).  Take a simple verb such as “jump”.   We change this depending on the sentence.  You might say “I jump on the trampoline”, “I jumped on the trampoline” or “I will jump on the trampoline”.  These all mean slightly different things.  (There are lots of other tenses too, but we will stick with these for today!)

Today, I am going to talk about how to teach children to use the past tense to talk about things that have happened.  In the regular past tense, we add an “ed” onto the end of a verb to put it into the past tense.  For example, “lick” becomes “licked” and “fold” becomes “folded”.

past-tense-verbs

The first thing to say is that many of the verbs we use most often are not regular.  Many of them have past tense forms that you just have to know.  For example, “go” becomes “went” and “eat” becomes “ate”.  Be aware of this, but I’m not going to focus on it today – we will come back to irregular past tenses another day.

Secondly, there are various reasons why children might struggle to use past tense verbs in their speech.  Some may have difficulty understanding the concept of things happening in the past.  Others understand the concept but find it hard to know when to use it.  Still others struggle with them because of speech sound difficulties.  For many children with unclear speech, grammar can become a problem, because adding the extra sounds onto the end of a word can be too challenging for them.  Using past tense verbs can be very tricky as it can mean blending several consonant sounds together at the end of a word.  For example, when you say “jumped”, the sounds you actually say are “jumpt”.  Putting three consonant sounds together is hard!  These children may know very well that the sounds should be there, but they find it hard to articulate them.  If you are going to work on past tense verbs with a child, be sure that they can pronounce them.

Step One

The first thing I always do is to introduce the idea of the past tense.  This is quite an abstract idea and can be hard to explain.  Usually the best way is to do it.  I get the child to do various actions with me and then we talk about what we did.  For example, we both jump up and down.  As we are jumping, I say “we are jumping”.  When we have finished I say, “what happened?  We jumped.”  We do lots more examples like this and I point out the difference between the words.  First I get them to listen to me and then I ask them to say what we did.

If I ask them what happened and they say “we are jumping” or “jumping”, I say “are we jumping now?  No, it’s finished.  We jumped”.

Top Tip – Make a list of verbs to use before you start this, to make sure that they are regular!  Here are some ideas – jump, hop, wave, clap, walk, shout, dance, point, crawl.

Step Two

Once I am sure that the child understands the concept, I use verb pictures to do lots of practise.  (Again, sort the pictures first so that you only have regular verbs in your pile).  This time, the picture will usually show a person doing something.  I explain to the child that we are going to talk about it like it happened yesterday or like it is finished.  What did they do?  We practise lots of different sentences with past tense verbs.

Another great way to do this is to take pictures of the child doing lots of different things, then ask them to tell the story of what they did by looking at the pictures.  This is more meaningful because they know it is something they did which is now finished.  EG “what did we do this morning?  We painted pictures, we listened to the teacher, then we played in the playground.”

Once the child has grasped the idea, it is a really easy thing to practise throughout the day, as we are constantly talking about things we have done.  You can use stories to practise too – see if your child can tell you back the story using one simple sentence for each picture and a past tense verb.

Errors

There are a few particular errors that I come across regularly when I am working on this.

  • One is that the child may add several different endings onto the verb.  For example, they might say “we jumpinged”.  If this happens, just say it back clearly so they can hear you say it correctly.  Alternatively, you could give them a choice.  For example, “do we say we jumpinged or we jumped?”  In this way the child may be able to correct him/herself.
  • Some children will start adding “ed” endings on to irregular verbs too.  For example, they might say things like “I eated dinner” or “We goed to the park”.  Don’t worry too much about this – this is a normal phase of development with learning tenses and shows that your child is starting to get the idea!
  • Some children may overdo their “ed” endings.  It’s hard to write this down clearly, but sometimes the written -ed makes an “ed” sound (as in “folded”) and other times it should make more of a “t” sound (as in clapped).  This depends on the other sounds in the word, and it can be tricky for some children to sort them out.  This is particularly hard for children with speech sound difficulties who may get tripped up by having to say slightly different sounds for different verbs.  If this happens, keep saying them back for the child to hear and ask them to have another try.  If they are really tricky for the child, you may need to teach them in two groups, depending on how they are pronounced.

Once your child has mastered regular past tense verbs, you may want to move on to irregular ones.  We will talk more about these another day.  What else do you do to teach regular “ed” endings to children?
