Cómo aprender inglés con Netflix

Es lunes por la noche. Llegas a casa del trabajo o la facultad, y te apetece relajarte, tomarte una cerveza o un refresco y ver tu serie favorita… Pero sabes que tienes que dedicarle tiempo al inglés. ¿Qué puedes hacer? Muy fácil, si estás suscrit@ a Netflix, puedes hacer las dos cosas a la vez: aprender inglés con Netflix con un capítulo de tu serie favorita.

Aquí te dejo con 5 pasos sencillos para aprender inglés con Netflix. Puedes mejorar tu pronunciación y otras habilidades lingüísticas muy fácilmente.

1. Elige la serie o programa que te venga mejor

¿Te gustaria mejorar tu acento americano? ¿Prefieres el inglés británico? ¿O te molaría más entender el bonito acento australiano?

Tener a mano una herramienta tan útil como Netflix para aprender inglés es fenomenal para mejorar nuestro Listening, ya que si quieres entender mejor el acento americano, puedes elegir “Friends”; si quieres familiarizarte con el acento británico “perfecto”, puedes poner “Downtown Abbey”; y si te apetece una mezcla de todo, elige “Lost”, donde hay personajes con acento australiano, americano, británico, hindi, etc.

2. No te pases

Después de elegir el programa o la película que más te guste, puedes elegir un diálogo en particular que te haya parecido interesante. Pero no te pases, el diálogo debería durar 2 o 3 minutos, ¡no más! Una sesión corta pero intensa para aprender inglés puede ser tan útil como una clase de 60 minutos mal aprovechada con un profesor. Si eliges bien la parte del vídeo que vas a trabajar, te puedes centrar realmente en la pronunciación y en algunas frases y palabras en particular. Pero recuerda, ¡3 minutos como máximo!

3. Sigue al actor

Vale, ya has elegido tu diálogo. Ahora vamos a ver cómo puedes mejorar tu pronunciación.

Dale al play y ve el vídeo un par de veces, fijándote en lo que dicen y cómo lo dicen. A continuación, lo que tienes que hacer es lo que llamamos “speech shadowing”. Se trata de repetir lo que van diciendo los actores casi a la vez que ellos. Esto lo puedes hacer de las siguientes formas:

• Método 1: Ponte los subtítulos en inglés y léelos a la vez que los actores o inmediatamente después.
• Método 2: Lleva a cabo el Método 1, y luego apaga los subtítulos e intenta repetir todos los sonidos y tonos de los personajes. Esto puede resultarte efectivo incluso si no te sabes cada una de las palabras.
• Método 3: Escucha lo que dice cada actor y pausa el vídeo después de cada frase para, a continuacón repetir lo que han dicho.
• Método avanzado: Repite prácticamente a la vez que cada actor sin pausar y sin subtítulos.

Aquí tienes un ejemplo de Sabrina, de Calm English, haciendo shadowing de estas formas con un capítulo de Modern Family.

4. Repite, repite y repite

Utiliza el shadowing de diferentes formas y repíte. Luego repite de nuevo y, por último, vuelve a repetir. La repetición, para aprender el inglés o cualquier otro idioma, es completamente esencial. Y sí, es normal que a veces te sientas así:

Puede que sea aburrido repetir tantas veces, pero realmente funciona. ¡Inténtalo!

Te puedo asegurar que cada vez que repitas el diálogo descubrirás algo nuevo. Además, cada vez que lo repites puedes centrarte en un aspecto diferente. La primera vez puedes prestar más atención cómo pronunciar la R, mientras que en la segunda te puedes centrar en el tono de las oraciones.

5. Toma apuntes

Y este es el último paso, y el más importante si realmente quieres exprimir el potencial de aprender inglés con Netflix para mejorar tu vocabulario y pronunciación.

Anota las frases que quieras volver a practicar en el futuro, hazte flashcards con palabras que quieras recordar, o simplemente escríbelo todo en tu libreta de inglés.

Supongo que tendrás algún sitio para tus apuntes de inglés, ¿no? Si no tienes ningún sitio donde tomar apuntes, ¿a qué esperas? Si prefieres los apuntes digitales, puedes utilizar apps como Evernote, o software como Google Docs para mantener todos tus apuntes organizados. Pero no te olvides de guardar los apuntes offline para estudiar y practicar cuando no tengas acceso a internet.

Resumen: cómo aprender inglés con Netflix

1. Elige tu serie favorita
2. Encuentra un diálogo que te guste o interese.
3. Repítelo varias veces para familiarizarte con él.
4. Utiliza los diferentes métodos de shadowing.
5. Repite varias veces. Si son muchas veces, mejor.
6. Apunta todo lo que te parezca útil o interesante.
7. Revisa, repasa y vuelve a empezar.

Metro Vancouver housing market off to a quieter start than last year

Home sales and listings trends are below long-term averages in the Metro Vancouver* housing market. This is due largely to reduced activity in the detached home market.

Residential property sales in the region totalled 1,523 in January 2017, a 39.5 per cent decrease from the 2,519 sales recorded in January 2016 and an 11.1 per cent decrease compared to December 2016 when 1,714 homes sold.

Last month’s sales were 10.3 per cent below our 10-year January sales average.

“From a real estate perspective, it’s a lukewarm start to the year compared to 2016,” Dan Morrison, Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) president said. “While we saw near record-breaking sales at this time last year, home buyers and sellers are more reluctant to engage so far in 2017.”

New listings for detached, attached and apartment properties in Metro Vancouver totalled 4,140 in January 2017. This represents a 6.8 per cent decrease compared to the 4,442 homes listed in January 2016 and a 215.5 per cent increase compared to December 2016 when 1,312 properties were listed.

The total number of homes currently listed for sale on the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in Metro Vancouver is 7,238, a 9.1 per cent increase compared to January 2016 (6,635) and a 14.1 per cent increase compared to December 2016 (6,345).

The sales-to-active listings ratio for January 2017 is 21 per cent. This is the lowest the ratio has been in the region since January 2015. Generally, analysts say that downward pressure on home prices occurs when the ratio dips below the 12 per cent mark for a sustained period, while home prices often experience upward pressure when it surpasses 20 per cent over several months.

“Conditions within the market vary depending on property type. The townhome and condominium markets are more active than the detached market at the moment,” Morrison said. “As a result, detached home prices declined about 7 per cent since peaking in July while townhome and condominium prices held steady over this period.”

The MLS® Home Price Index composite benchmark price for all residential properties in Metro Vancouver is currently $896,000. This represents a 3.7 per cent decline over the past six months and a 0.2 per cent decrease compared to December 2016.

Sales of detached properties in January 2017 reached 444, a decrease of 57.6 per cent from the 1,047 detached sales recorded in January 2016. The benchmark price for detached properties is $1,474,800. This represents a 6.6 per cent decline over the last six months and a 0.6 per cent decrease compared to December 2016.

Sales of apartment properties reached 825 in January 2017, a decrease of 24.7 per cent compared to the 1,096 sales in January 2016.The benchmark price of an apartment property is $512,300. This represents a 0.3 per cent increase over the last six months and a 0.4 per cent increase compared to December 2016.

Attached property sales in January 2017 totalled 254, a decrease of 32.4 per cent compared to the 376 sales in January 2016. The benchmark price of an attached unit is $666,500. This represents a 0.4 per cent decline over the last six months and a 0.7 per cent increase compared to December 2016.

Supporting children with unclear speech training

Helen and I have been very busy creating our first online training course and it is very nearly finished!  We are really pleased with it.  From our work with nursery/ school staff and parents we know there are many people out there who are looking for training, especially to help children with unclear speech.  We decided to make the course online so it can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

So, let us tell you a little more about it.

Will “Supporting children with unclear speech” help my child?

The course aims to help children who are:-

• Aged 3 years or older
• Have difficulty with saying speech sounds clearly
• Are able to understand language at an age appropriate level
• Are using sentences to talk.

This course will help you support your child.  However, it does not replace assessment by a speech and language therapist.

Will “Supporting children with unclear speech” help me?

This course is aimed at parents, TA’s and SENCO’s who are working with one or more children with unclear speech.  This course is for you if:-

• You work with at least one child who has speech sound difficulties.
• You want to know more about typical speech development and when to be concerned.
• You want to learn how to teach a child a new sound.
• You want more ideas of games and activities to keep therapy fun but focused

What do I get?

This is an online course, made up of 10 modules which you can complete in your own time.  The module titles are:-

• Speech sound development
• Identifying a problem and making a referral
• The stages of speech sound therapy
• Phonological awareness
• Saying single sounds
• Blending consonants and vowels
• Single words
• Sentence level
• Generalisation
• Tracking progress

How long will the course take?

Each module will consist of one or more short videos as well as handouts and other course notes to read.  There will be exercises and activities to try at the end of each module.  There are 21 videos altogether with a total viewing of over 3 hours.  We currently aim to have the course with unlimited access once you have paid, so there is no time limit on working through or going back and watching parts of it again.

What do I need?

You will need to register for an online account to access the course material, with Zenler – our course host.

You will also need:-

• Access to a device with internet connection which can read PDF’s and play videos.
• An interest in finding out more about helping children with unclear speech!
• A printer would be advantageous.

What else do I get?

We have set up a private Facebook group which everyone on the course will have access to.  You will be able to ask questions about the course or material which we will answer.  You will also be able to support each other through the course too.  We aim to answer all questions within 48 hours of being posted.
