September Market Update: Is The Vancouver Housing Market Slowing?
Hello again! I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer so far!! I am providing you with an update as we head into the final stretch of summer. Principal's List September 1
The Principal's List is back! Each list celebrates those students who have recently shown ISB Core Values (Global Mindedness, Integrity, Respect, Balance, Service, Creativity) in a way that got their teachers' attention. A big thank to all these students for leading us all with their example. They should each get a cool Principal's List badge from their homeroom teacher today! A big thanks to our Middle School PTA for providing the badges!
Grade 6 |
Abigail Toone comes to each class ready to learn and participate fully. She is also very quick to compliment the skills of her teammates. Good sportsmanship, Abby! |
Joel Kumi demonstrated excellent Respect and Integrity on MS Olympic day during Newcomb Ball. He encouraged team mates, showed great leadership, and tried to make sure that everyone on his team got a chance to play. |
Integrity, respect: Katie Kim is always prepared, on time, helping others get organized and helpful to me, as well. She volunteers regularly in class, with enthusiasm. |
Bryan Lim has really stepped up over the last two weeks by helping out his fellow classmates without being asked. |
Hannah Wills has made a great impression on being new to ISB but also being new to her homeroom. She has shown 'Service' by being considerate of the class pet Chewbacca and feeding him when needed. |
Erica Pan demonstrated caring, respect, and integrity by volunteering to be a mentor buddy for a new student. She took her responsibilities seriously and made sure the student was looked after and felt welcome during the first week of school. Erica has also set a good example for her peers through her positive attitude, excellent work habits, and modeling of appropriate behavior. |
Abby Toone showed a commitment to service when she volunteered to run an important errand for her teacher during Mentoring Class. Great job Abby. |
Bersabeh Belay showed a commitment to service when she volunteered to run an important errand for her teacher during Mentoring class. Great job Bersabeh. |
Eric Wang was absent early on in the year, and he showed integrity by coming to make up the work he had missed at lunch the day he returned to school. He immediately made up the classwork and the homework as best as he could. |
Leon Guan demonstrated great responsibility and integrity as a learner last week, when he came in after school to ask questions about a science assignment. He didn't rush and took his time learning. Great job! |
Jason Lau is new to ISB this year and is demonstrating balance in organizing his planner for his work load and in making new friends in grade 6! Way to go Jason! |
Grade 7 |
Ben Bailey demonstrated integrity when he apologized and took ownership for disrupting our Chinese class when he entered the room late. He also demonstrated respect for our classroom guidelines and expectations. |
Huck Henderschedt has shown great leadership and courage in his collaborative work during our first weeks of FA. His thoughtfulness is particularly evident in his writing and discussion. |
Ethan Koh showed his extraordinary tech skills by taking the lead to make the homeroom video for FA3. |
Ben Bailey showed integrity when he brought the contents (some money) of the desk he was sitting in, up to me, to make sure the owner might be found. I appreciated Ben's willingness to take care of the situation and the promptness with which he carried it out! Thanks, Ben!!! |
Jerry Zheng showed integrity by turning in the money he found in the hallway. |
Lynn Chen showed kindness and respect at the MS function by going out of her way to make sure her classmate was taken care of. |
Grade 8 |
Nefertiti Cheung served as a buddy to a new student in the first weeks of school and, in the process, extended her helpful and friendly attitude to all of her classmates in a way that helped to build a strong sense of community in our class! |
Kevin Hong demonstrated service and creativity as he went above and beyond as DJ for the Back to School Bash. He put time and effort into the job and his excellent musical taste resulted in a fantastic dance for all. Thanks for a great start to the functions, Kevin! |
Haylie Wampler showed great creativity in her Chinese class work. She is using a variety of visuals to support her ideas so to make her expressions more effective and attractive to the audience. |
I am going to score a lot of goals, Mell Mbaoh said on the way to the Olympic Day soccer field. But as I reffed the afternoon games I did not see Mell score a single goal. What he did do is show off some impressive dribbling skills and pass off the ball some someone else could score. Respect. |

I Can Do apps
It is no secret that Elizabeth and I love using our iPads with children. Today I thought I would share one of my favourite app companies with you – I Can Do apps. They make a range of speech therapy apps, all of which are really useful, but today I’m just going to talk about the two I use most often – Verbs and Associations. No-one has asked me to write this review and I paid for the apps myself. I am just sharing things that I find useful in therapy.
Verbs
One of the staple basics of any speech therapists resource cupboard is a good set of verb pictures. You can use them to work on so many different targets. I do have a couple of good paper sets of verb pictures, but this app is also great for this. When you open the app, you see these options
If you click on the top option, you get a huge set of verb flashcards. These include simple and more complex verbs, all portrayed in beautiful colour photos with the word written underneath. Even better, there is more than one example for each verb! Here is an example of one of the flashcards.
I often use this part of the app, just for ease, rather than carrying around lots of sets of pictures. I can use them to do all kinds of activities (see our post on verbs here).
One of the great things about I Can Do apps is that they all break a skill down into several different levels. Each app offers 5 different levels, which immediately increases their flexibility and also makes them great to recommend to parents and schools, so they can work through the levels.
In my opinion, Verbs would be worth the money just for the flashcards, but it also has 4 other activities, mostly relating to tenses and grammar.
Here are some examples from the other levels.
This app is available in the App Store for £3:99 – an absolute bargain!
Associations
This is another app that I use really frequently. I very often work on making and describing connections and I’m always on the lookout for new resources to use. This app fits the bill perfectly.
As you can see, there are 5 different levels to choose from again. Here are examples of 2 of the levels.
There are again beautiful colour photos and a range of different useful activities.
These apps are not the most exciting apps ever – you scroll through 10 questions, and it gives you a score out of 10 at the end. There is no reward activity included within it, so with some children I will combine the app with a reward game. So for example, we might talk about one of the verb pictures and then put a sword into Pop up Pirate or knock down a skittle or whatever activity I might have used with paper pictures. Some children will sit and just work through the questions though just because it’s on an iPad and you can get loads done in a really short time!
This one is also available in the App Store for £3:99.
I have just talked about my two favourite I Can Do apps today, but they have a range of other apps too, working on before/after, sequencing, yes/no questions, phonological awareness skills and lots more. You can see the full range here.
Also, do look out for their bundles. They offer bundles of 4 or more of their apps for a reduced rate. Even better, if you already own one, as you click through the buy the bundle, it will give you a discount for the one you already have! I now own most of their apps because of this!
Which is your favourite I Can Do app?

IDEAS FOR A THEMED FAMILY VACATION
When it comes to a themed family vacation, you have a good number of exciting options to choose from–there’s bound to be one your whole family will enjoy. Theme parks are more varied than ever, with many more to choose from than just a decade or two ago. Family themed resorts offer activities and amenities for all age groups; the same can be found on many different cruise ship vacations. Picking the best themed vacation for your family is often simply a matter of figuring out what activities each of your family members enjoy doing the most while on one of these trips.
Orlando Theme Parks
This famous Florida vacation destination has a wide variety of theme parks, each centred around movie or TV-based themes, fabled story places, or the kids’ favorite animated characters. Walt Disney World and its associated resorts are among the most popular in the world. Consider going during the holiday seasons: Easter, Christmas or New Years. With extra celebrations and parades planned, these are some of the most fun times.
Themed Family Resorts
Each Disney resort has a different theme, each centred around a place, an era, or a topic. Some favourites include the Caribbean Beach Resort, the Grand Floridian Resort, and the All-Star Sports Resort. Another popular family resort destination is the Atlantis One Water Park Resort in the Bahamas.
This one’s theme is centred around the lost city of Atlantis, and it features Splash Academy for younger kids as well as Entourage, a youth program for pre-teens and teens. A recent new location called Atlantis The Palm has opened up in Dubai, and it features a giant themed maze as well as more complementary supervised activities for kids of all ages.
Themed Family Friendly Cruises
Many different cruise lines feature themed vacation activities for kids, including swim and surf lessons, sports activities, movies, creative play, themed parties, and much more. Kids can enjoy cupcake decorating, dodgeball matches, and other activities that often get them to learn something new as well. Many cruise ships have a variety of themes. Consider booking a vacation onboard one of Royal Carribean’s ships featuring a DreamWorks® experience. From Shrek and Fiona to the gang from Madagascar, family members of all ages will be delighted.
Disney Cruise Lines offer the magical of Walt Disney while at sea. Family cruises are often favorites among pre-teens and teenagers because they have their own activities, dance clubs, movie nights, and plenty of other opportunities to meet and socialize with people their own age. These features of themed cruises also afford their parents the chance to have fun on their vacation as well.
Whatever your family enjoys, whether making memories at sea or strolling down Main Street USA, we hope these ideas will help you plan your next family vacation!

ASU Cancels Open House at Sun Devil Stadium
Here at the Phoenix Real Estate Guy, we love a good open house. We also love us some Sun Devil Football.
When we got the email from ASU a while back stating that we would be able to take a tour of the new Sun Devil stadium this coming weekend, we were pretty excited. Unfortunately, the open house has been cancelled as some “final touches” are put in place before the stadium opens to the public. ( see the email below from ASU concernning the ASU open house ) So, if you were planning to attend the open house at the new Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday, August 27th, please note that it has been cancelled.
The ASU football season WILL kick off on on Saturday, September 3rd at 7:45pm against NAU.
See a great game day rundown on DieHard Devil for what to expect when you arrive at the stadium this year.
I took a little tour of the stadium back in July and was pretty excited to see the changes that are taking place. I took these photos from that tour. The first two photos are renderings of the new stadium. The third photo is why MY seats will look like on game days.
Tour of Sun Devil Stadium
Here’s a video tour of the stadium in case you want to take a look. It’s about 11 minutes long and will give you a good idea as to what is going on. It’s pretty cool!
For a VERY short video that I shot in July, take a look at this one. It’s less than a minute long for those of you who have short attention spans!
See you at the games! Go Devils!
Dear Sun Devil Football Ticket Holder,
We are excited for you to be the first fans to enjoy the Sun Devil Stadium Reinvention when you join us for the season opener against NAU on Sept. 3.
If you’re half as eager as we are for the season to start, you will understand that Phase II of the Reinvention has been on a tight schedule since construction began the night of ASU’s 2015 Territorial Cup win last November. Construction crews have been working around the clock for the past nine months to make sure the stadium will be ready.
And it will be.
The next eight days are crucial for construction crews to put the final touches on the project, andunfortunately it is in the best interests of safety and keeping the construction schedule on track to cancel our Open House event this Saturday, Aug. 27.
Our two highest priorities are the safety of our fans and ensuring Sun Devil Stadium is ready for next Saturdaynight. The construction crew is completing the finishing details, so an Open House at this time would hinder both of these objectives.
Sun Devil Athletics was given the option of holding the Open House and restricting access for our fans to the south end of the stadium, however we didn’t feel this was a fair option for you. Our fans deserve an opportunity to see the stadium and the enhanced gameday experience in its entirety.
With hopes of doing just that, we are opening the stadium on Sept. 3 at 6:00 p.m., two hours before kickoff and 30 minutes earlier than the normally scheduled 90 minutes for all ticket holders, to afford you an opportunity to find your seats and orient yourself in the new space.
Fans who are interested in supporting the Reinvention Campaign are encouraged to contact the Sun Devil Club at 480-727-7700 to receive a tour of the newly created premium level for a look at our club seating options.
We are very sorry for this inconvenience. Thank you for your support and patience as we work through the final week of Phase II of the Reinvention, and we look forward to you experiencing the reinvented stadium and cheering on Sun Devil Football next Saturday.
Go Devils!

How a Third Space Contributes to a Healthy Lifestyle
Life can be tiring, stressful, and filled with pressure, regardless of a person’s age or personal situation. This is why it is now more important than ever before to have a third place in your life where you can escape. Consider how Starbucks created a third space, giving people an place to connect and relieve the pressures of everyday life.
A Time for Playfulness
The right atmosphere and mood are key factors to creating space that is relaxed and playfulTo feel relaxed and playful. Whether surrounded by bright colours to boost energy or you are immersed in a sea of pastels and whimsical characters, it’s difficult to resist feeling happy and joyful in a third (or themed) space.
Coolstuff Studios designs interiors that are the ideal setting for third places in a pediatric dentist office, a church Sunday School space or other location. When children, adults, or entire families enter the space, they will immediately be caught up in a beautiful world of fantasy; every visit will be a wonderful experience.
Learn more about our FREE Envisioneering Encounter here.
Playfulness can make a positive difference for people of all ages; aiding in the relief of loneliness, boredom and stress. When people have the chance to visit a fantasy world, they will look forward to visiting it on a regular basis.
A Home Away from Home
Every person needs to feel like they belong and third spaces can feel like a home away from home. Consider the self-employed person who uses their local coffee shop as an office every day. Or the group of children who can’t wait to connect at Sunday School each week. In a welcoming atmosphere, you can spend time with old friends and make new ones, have lighthearted conversations and enjoy other activities. Every person can be him or herself in an attractive, wholesome environment.
Being authentic can increase one’s confidence, joy, and peace of mind. You do not need to travel far to find this special place. Any business that you or your family would normally visit can be turned into an adventure. With themed space interior design, you will be walking into a place of joy every time you visit.
Everybody wants to have fun. Everyone needs a break in their day-to-day routine. A themed space is an option that offers opportunities for both. They are a great place to get away from the worries of everyday life, and enjoy time with your friends, family members, and colleagues. The dentist’s office, church, coffee shop, and virtually any business in your community can come alive when it incorporates a themed design.

Encouraging eye contact
Sometimes, children with speech sound difficulties tend to give slightly less eye contact. This means that they don’t look as much at other people when they are talking. This is not always the case, but I have often had parents comment on it. Certainly, when I am doing speech sound therapy, I spend a lot of time trying to encourage the child to watch my face and copy – generally their ability to say the sound is much better if they are really watching what I am doing.
Just one word of caution before I start – I am talking here about children with speech sound difficulties. Children with other difficulties, in particular those on the autistic spectrum, can find eye contact difficult, even painful. With these children, it is counter-productive to insist on eye contact. It is so difficult for them that they can’t focus on anything else. If this is the case for your child, these ideas are probably not helpful – they won’t make any difference anyway, and it is probably not the most useful thing to work on. However, for many children who have no other difficulties and just need to work on a few speech sounds, encouraging them to look at you more, especially during the times you are practising speech sounds, can really help.
So, how do we do this without constantly saying “look at me”?! I have to say, that I do usually end up saying “look at me” quite a lot too! However, here are some other ideas that can work really well with many children.
- Get on your child’s level. If your child is sitting on the floor, you should sit on the floor too, so you are at the same level. I sometimes find myself moving several times through a session so that I am in the best place to get eye contact relative to where they are. Sometimes, I will lay on the floor but usually sitting is sufficient.
- Use toys. I often move the toy we are playing with up to my face. I wait until the child is looking at the toy or game piece, then I move it slowly and the child’s eyes often move with it. As soon as their eyes reach my face, I say the sound I want them to watch. I sometimes even do this with my iPad – I bring it up next to my face and then close the case so that they can no longer see the screen!
- Use your hands. This is one of the many reasons why I usually use Cued Articulation during my speech sound therapy sessions. Using your hands to make a sign to go with the sound, is often a great way of encouraging a child to look at you while you’re talking. You can also use a finger in a similar way to how I described using toys (this is a trick I learned from Elizabeth). Put your finger out in their line of sight, then when they focus on it, move it up to your face.
- Use bubbles. Most speech therapists I know love bubbles! I am no exception. There are many things they are great for (see our post here) but one of them is for encouraging children to look at your face. In the anticipation of waiting for you to blow a bubble, most children look at your mouth. Try saying a sound and getting the child to try copying, then blowing some bubbles.
- Use a mirror. Most young children enjoy looking at themselves in a mirror. Sit side by side with your child and look in a mirror together. Lots of children find it easier to look at your reflection than to look directly at you. This is often a fantastic way to encourage children to watch you saying a sound.
What other ideas do you have for encouraging children to look at you when practising speech sounds?

The season has been postponed until Season 4 in the spring. The reason for this, is there are no other middle schools in Beijing that have teams to play during season one but there are some schools willing to play Season 4. Sorry to disappoint anyone by this, but we feel there will be a better chance for the softball team to play more games in the spring.
Please if you have any questions about this, come see Mr. Cuthbert in the activities office.

A Letter To My Son With Down Syndrome The Night Before His First Day Of Kindergarten
Thanks for checking out today's post. After reading I'd love to hear your thoughts on the comments by clicking here ---> A Letter To My Son With Down Syndrome The Night Before His First Day Of Kindergarten
Noah, wow! I can’t believe you start your first day of elementary school tomorrow. I just finished putting you to bed and wanted to share a few things with you before your big day.
First, you need to know I’m a little scared. It takes a lot of trust in other people (and God) to let other people be responsible for you all day. Sure you’ve been in preschool before, but this is different. This is a big elementary school! At dinner tonight I thought about how the playground at your new school isn’t fenced in all the way, and you like to run away sometimes. I worry about the teacher not paying attention and you running to the street and getting hit by a car, or kidnapped. I worry about other kids making fun of you, or wondering why you’re still in diapers, or can’t talk as well as they probably can (yet!) I worry about you needing help with your lunch box, or name tag, or backpack, or shoes, or a million other things.
I wonder if you’re ready for this.
You are.
I’ve seen you cross so many milestones. I remember the moment you were born. I remember bringing you home from the hospital for the first time. The remember all of those physical therapy sessions on the treadmill to help you learn to walk. I remember when you sat up for the first time. I remember when you pulled yourself up for the first time. When you crawled for the first time. When you took your first steps, and countless other milestones. Tomorrow is just another one of those milestones for you, and it’s a big one.
I love you so much. So much. And I’m so proud to be your dad, more than you will probably ever know. I wouldn’t change one chromosome about you. From the second I lied eyes on you at the hospital I’ve been your biggest fan (your mom is a close 2nd…!) You’ve crushed so many of your milestones, you’ve worked as hard as any little boy I’ve ever know, and I know you will do well as you start kindergarten!
As you start the first day of what will be a long journey of your education I want to share a few thoughts with you. These thoughts not only apply for tomorrow, but for the rest of your life.
- You were created by God, in the Image of God, to do amazing things! Genesis 1:27 says that God made all people (including you) in His image. Psalm 139:13 says that God knitted you in your mother’s womb. And Ephesians 2:10 says that God created you to do good works! These are some of the most important things I can tell you. You were made specifically by the God of the universe and He loves and cares for you greatly. If you forget everything else, remember this. God loves you greatly, son.
- God is control. Nothing in this world is a surprise to God. He runs the show, and He runs it well. Even when things happen in life that we don’t understand (and the odds are they will) He understands. God doesn’t tell us we will always understand everything, but He does tell us to trust Him in everything that happens. This is a lesson that you’ll have to learn over the course of your life, but trust me son, You can trust God. He knows what He’s doing.
- Your parents love you greatly. We aren’t perfect parents by any means, but man, oh man, do we love you. We’re crazy about you.
- People can be mean. Don’t let this surprise you. And as much as you can, don’t let it bother you. This is really hard to do, especially when your young. But you’ve got to learn to shake the haters off, and there will be haters.
- Extend grace to people as much as you can. People are probably going to say things they don’t mean. People are probably going to make comments because they’ve never meet anyone with Down syndrome before. Some of these comments may be mean, some of them may be made out of ignorance. As hard as it can be, try to give people mountains and mountain of grace. (Even the mean people.)
- A lot of people have never met anyone with Down syndrome. You look different to others who do not have Down syndrome. You sound different than others you don’t have Down syndrome. It’s ok. You need to let people know it’s okay to ask questions. Let people know they don’t have to walk on egg shells around you. Give them the freedom to talk with you about Down syndrome. People can be afraid of what they don’t know, so help them to get to know you. (This will be hard to do tomorrow since you’re only in kindergarten, but I wanted to put this one on the list.)
- God has given you a personality that gives others joy. I love watching you give high-fives to others, or sing, or dance. You’re a fun little boy. I love the joy that you have. When people get around you, you help bring out their joy. That’s awesome. Keep doing that!
- Your mom and dad worry about you…your dad way more than your mom! You’re our little boy, and so we worry about you. We worry about how other people will treat you. Or you doing something that you don’t know what your doing is unsafe (like running to the street when no one is watching.) We have to keep going back to number 2 on this list and remembering that God is in control and we can trust Him. He loves you even more than we do, and we trust Him. (But know, we’re still going to worry.)
- I’m proud of you. Like crazy, over the top, can’t even put it in words, proud.
- You have to keep your shoes on in school. Please.
- God is in control. He loves you. And you can trust Him.
- I’m only a phone call away. Seriously, if you want to come home, call me! I know, I probably shouldn’t say this, but I am. And I mean it.
- I’m going to be eating a lot of lunches with you. Get ready. (I also hope you’ll let me do that when it’s not so cool to have your dad come eat lunch with you.)
- Oh, and you rocked those Chuck Taylor’s today!
I’m sure I could think of many other things to share with you, but these are some of the biggies. I love you son. A lot. I have this strange mix of fear, excitement, and love going on inside me right now, but I can sleep well tonight knowing that God holds the whole world in His hands, and that includes you.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. You’re a special kid, Noah, and not just because you were born with Down syndrome. I know that God created you to do something amazing with your life, and I’m thankful I have a front row seat to watch it all unfold.
Sleep well tonight “little” man. You’ve got a big day tomorrow. (And so do I.)
Love,
Your Dad
