upcycle old t-shirts for a final Ignite project

For a final Ignite project, we are required to take an action and raise awareness of environmental issues. For this project, we have decided to raise awareness for environmental issues caused by plastic bags. Plastic bags can be harmful when thrown into the ocean, and it can cause many deaths to sea life each year. Hence, we decided to upcycle old t-shirts into reusable bags to minimize the amount of plastic used each year. We would love for you guys to donate some unwanted t-shirts for our project. Please drop these t-shirts off before June 5th outside the MS/HS Cafeteria. There will be a box along with a sign above. Thank you for helping us to raise awareness!

Waste x 0

Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, and saves enough energy to heat an average home for six months. A group of FA8 students have talked to Sodexho and have implemented a new recycling system for ISB. There will be new green buckets in certain places around the school that are for plastics and aluminium products. Some things that CAN'T be recycled in these buckets are things like plastic bottle caps, paper juice boxes, or anything contaminated with food. The buckets will be placed near:

-The main entrance of the cafeteria

-The tray return part of the cafeteria

-The back entrance of the cafeteria

-The main entrance (the ES entrance)

-The high school entrances

-The upper gallery

-By the glass box {6th-grade hallway glass box}

-3129

-3404

-The entrance for gym 1 & gym 2 (by the printer)

Make the easy and good choice to put your plastics and aluminium products in here so you don't contribute to global denigration.

Beware of Wire Fraud in Your Real Estate Transaction

Wire fraud is a serious problem in the real estate industry and it doesn’t look like this threat to our transactions will be going away any time soon. I’m glad that so many people in our industry are taking a proactive approach to educating the public and the real estate industry about this potential nightmare for buyers and sellers.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the National Association of REALTORS have both been issuing warnings to consumers to help explain how these scams work.

From a NAR article, we see what they say about how the process can work.

Hackers break into the email account of a consumer or real estate professional to determine the date of an upcoming closing. They then use that information to send a fraudulent email to the buyer, posing as one of the professionals involved in the transaction.

The email contains wiring instructions that are allegedly tied to the closing, but which actually rout directly to the scammer’s account. If a buyer is fooled, they may see their bank account wiped out. National Association of REALTORS.

Is wire fraud common in a real estate transaction?

Unfortunately, there have been many phishing scams where thieves hack into the email systems of people who are buying or selling a home and send ficticious emails telling buyers or sellers to wire their money to bogus accounts.  As you can imagine, things can get ugly very quickly.

Here’s part of what the FTC had to say in a recent blog post:

  • “Don’t email financial information. It’s not secure.”
  • “If you’re giving your financial information on the web, make sure the site is secure. Look for a URL that begins with https (the “s” stands for secure). And, instead of clicking a link in an email to go to an organization’s site, look up the real URL and type in the web address yourself.”
  • “Be cautious about opening attachments and downloading files from emails, regardless of who sent them. These files can contain malware that can weaken your computer’s security.”
  • “Keep your operating system, browser, and security software up to date.

Our state and local associations have been very involved in trying to get the word out, as well.

wire fraud in real estate transactions

Here’s an educational video from our friend Scott Drucker where he talks more about the wire fraud problems we are seeing in the industry. Scott is General Counsel for the Arizona Department of Real Estate. I’m pretty sure he’s seen more cases of wire fraud than he’d like to.

This video shows the Arizona Department of Real Estate Commissioner talking about wire fraud, as well. Take a look at what Judy Lowe has to say about this growing problem.

10 tips to protect your financial information:

  1. Never wire money to an escrow account without verifying the wiring instructions.
  2. It is NOT common for wiring instructions to change during a transactoion.
  3. Pay VERY close attention to who you are dealing with.
  4. Do not ASSume that “everything is fine.”
  5. It is ok to call and speak to your escrow officer.
  6. If you are not 100% sure, don’t send your money!
  7. A 3rd party company should not be asking you for money. Only your escrow company.
  8. A cashier’s check given to the title company is safer than wiring your funds.
  9. I can not handle your wiring instructions. Please don’t ask.
  10. Verify, verify, verify. We work with some awesome professionals who are happy to help!

In the beginning of your transaction, your escrow officer should always be in contact with you. They will need your contact information and they can provide wiring instructions for their company.

The email/wire fraud scammers are out in full force and are getting more clever by the minute. If you are someone that will be sending or receiving money via a wire transfer, be absolutely certain that the person/company/entity you are communicating with is legitimate and that you have personally verified the sending/receiving wire transfer information, verbally, either in person or at a phone number that you are sure is legitimate. DO NOT EVER RELY on relayed wire transfer information from a 3rd party, which means anyone that isn’t the sending or receiving party.

Wire Fraud – Kind of a Big Deal:

As you can imagine, these kinds of crimes are taken very seriously by the authorities. If you have been scammed or if you think someone may be trying to steal your money or identity, you should let the FTC know!

Please don’t ever assume that an email you are reading with wire transfer information is real. In fact, my advice would be to assume it isn’t real until you can actually, legitimately confirm the sender/recipient and the detailed information therein.

    Mumbling

Mumbling or unclear speech is something that we come across most frequently with school aged children. They normally have all the expected speech sounds, but when chatting are just harder to understand.  Some may speak quietly, others may speak too quickly, but overall they are just mumbling!  This reduced intelligibility can stop children participating in class and socialising – so what can we do to help?

Firstly, we need to make the child aware of how their talking sounds.  We can’t expect them to correct anything if they don’t realise they are hard to understand.  An easy way to do this is to record them speaking.  Now that all our phones and tablets record, this is nice and straight forward (please ensure you have parental permission as appropriate for your employer or your terms and conditions!).  Encourage your child to listen to themselves talking and see how they would describe their speech.

You may need to introduce some ways to describe their speech – have they heard of mumbling? Do they think they are slurring or speaking too fast?  Find words that your child understands.  Please be careful not to sound really negative about their talking – we don’t want to stop them talking altogether! But maybe point out that a particular sentence was tricky to hear all the words.

If your child is finding it hard to hear or identify that they are mumbling, you can play a game where you say/ read sentences. Say some clearly and others mumbled.  Encourage your child to identify which is which.  If you need more ideas, Jenna has written a great post here, which has video clips to describe and show what mumbling is.  You can watch these with your child.

The next step is to get your child to say or read sentences.  You can have fun with this!  You can introduce the idea of speaking slowly and quickly. Encourage your child to say a sentence really quickly and then really slowly.  You often find that when children slow down, their speech becomes clearer.  You can praise them and talk about how clear their speech sounds when they slow down.  Some children may need to be encouraged to talk a little more loudly or with more confidence.  Sometimes for these children you might need to practise shouting or projecting your voice to the back of a room.  Play around with it and see what works best for your child.

Once your child has mastered speaking clearly when they are concentrating in a specific task, the next step is to help your child generalise this clear speech to everyday tasks.  You may need to talk about how important it is to speak clearly – that it will help in class or when talking on the phone.  We all want other people to understand us.  If you are working with an older child you maybe able to agree on which activities they are going to try and speak more clearly in and then get them to feedback to you afterwards about how it went. Was it easy to speak clearly?  Did it help? What will they do next time?

    Dummies

Dummies or pacifiers! – Whatever you call them, this is a subject that often comes up for speech therapists working with younger children.  Are they a problem? Will they affect speech development? When and how can you get rid of them? So today I am going to try and answer some of these questions.  This advice will be suitable for most typically developing children.

    Advantages

Some babies find sucking soothing and they can play a part in settling a baby to sleep. This is often the reason that parents start to use dummies.  There is also some support for dummies helping premature babies learn to suck. I would never tell a parent not to use a dummy with a baby.

    Disadvantages

There are a number of disadvantages to using a dummy. As a speech therapist I am concerned with the impact on a child’s speech and language development.

When a baby has a dummy in their mouth for a long time, it can reduce their babble and also how they play with sounds and words.  They are also less likely to copy sounds from an adult.  These are crucial skills for speech and language development.

Excessive dummy use is also linked to dental problems such as an open bite or teeth being distorted.  It can also cause the muscles at the front of the mouth to become over developed compared to those at the back.  This can cause tongue thrust – where the tongue is pushed forward in the mouth, which in turn can push teeth forward.

As sucking opens the Eustachian tube (the little tube that links the ear and the mouth), prolonged use of a dummy can lead to an increase in middle ear infection.  It allows more time for bacteria to travel from the mouth to the ear.

When should a child stop using a dummy?

For most children, try and stop using a dummy by the time they are a year old.  You can gradually wean them off using a dummy however it can often be best to stop and make a clean break.  If you are going to do this, remember to throw away ALL the dummies in the house and your car and your bag etc  Babies will normally only fuss for 2 or 3 days.

If your child is older and you want to stop using a dummy, it often helps to involve your child.  Get them to help you find all the dummies in the house.  I know some families that have spoken about how grown up the child is now and ‘exchanged’ the dummies for a little gift or toy.  I also know some families that say that they are sending the dummies to the dummy fairy or to little babies that need them.  Then you pack up all the dummies with your child and actually post them somewhere!

    How should dummies be used?

    • If your toddler is still using a dummy, always remove it if they are trying to talk.
    • Only use it for a few minutes to help settle your child.
    • Remember that crying is a communication. Try and work out what your baby/ child wants first rather than using the dummy straight away.
    • Try and limit dummy use to sleep or nap time.

CAE Academy & FCE Academy: Great Apps for Your Use of English

When English academies prepare our students for Cambridge English exams like First – FCE (B2), Advanced – CAE (C1) and Proficiency – CPE (C2), we are aware that there are three parts which can be particularly tricky for most English learners: Listening, Speaking and Use of English, the latter being the purpose of today’s post. For this reason, today I’m going to tell you about CAE Academy and FCE Academy, two apps which can come in very handy.

    FCE ACADEMY CAE ACADEMY APPS

    leer-en-espanol-boton

The Use of English paper can be slightly complicated, especially for people who face it for the first time, as it is basically a mixture of grammar and vocabulary, and the ability to apply grammatical and lexical knowledge. Therefore, besides knowing all the rules and structures, it is absolutely necessary to practise as much as possible. And that’s why in this post I will be reviewing these two apps, because they provide tons of exercises for the Use of English paper for Advanced (CAE) and First (FCE).

CAE Academy & FCE Academy Apps

CAE Academy and FCE Academy are almost identical apps, yet adapted to different levels, that is C1 and B2, respectively. They have been created by Prosperity Education, a company founded by 3 experts in Cambridge English exams.

For this review, I will use CAE Academy, but bear in mind that both apps are almost the same, except for the level, the colours and the name, as you can see in the picture below.

    CAE Academy FCE ACademy

    How does CAE Academy work?

CAE Academy, which focuses on Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), is really easy to use. When you open the app, the main menu comes up, where you can choose the part of the Use of English you want to practise:

    • Part 1: Multiple choice cloze
    • Part 2: Open cloze
    • Part 3: Word transformation
    • Part 4: Key word transformation

Simply choose one and you’ll access the list of exercises available to do. For parts 1, 2 and 3, each exercise has a title, as they are chunks of text, while for part 4 the exercises are numbered.

When we access one of the exercises, the way the app works is extremely simple:

    • To answer each item, simply tap the gap you want to complete. In Use of English Part 1, a menu with 4 options comes up from the lower part of the screen so you can choose the best answer. As for the rest of the parts, a text field becomes available for you to type in your answer. Check out the pictures below to get a better idea.

CAE Academy FCE Academy apps 2

    • In the top right corner there are 3 icons with different functionalities. The first one, the clock, will time us while doing each exercise, starting as soon as we open the task. If we turn on the second button, tick and cross, this will mean that each time you provide an answer it will be corrected straightaway. If we don’t turn this option on, you will have to use the “Finish test” button at the bottom of the screen, below the text. Finally, there’s the information button, which displays the instructions for each exercise when tapped. However, if you want to abandon the task without finishing, you can use the “Quit test” button, below the text.
    • Once we have completed one or more exercises, the main screen will display the average score for each part. This is really useful to get an idea of how well or badly we would do in the actual exam and to see which parts we should be paying more or less attention to. Remember that, in order to pass First (FCE) and Advanced (CAE), you need an average score of 60%.

CAE ACADEMY FCE ACADEMY APP 3

    • When you have done all the exercises, if you want, you can start over from scratch by uninstalling and downloading the app again.

By using this app, you can practise a lot and find out how you’re doing exactly, getting a good idea of the score you would get in the actual exam.

What I like about CAE Academy & FCE Academy

These apps are extremely useful for various reasons:

    • Both apps are extremely easy to use.
    • I love that you can time youself doing every exercise.
    • The best thing about them is seeing how your average score evolves, as it’s extremely useful in order to know if you should take the exam or not.
    • You can try the Lite version of both apps, which is completely free, before deciding to purchase the full version.
    • They both have quite a few exercises for each part: 37 examples of parts 1, 2 and 3, and 12 exercises for part 4 (Key word transformation). If we bear in mind that each of Cambridge English Past Papers book contains only 4 examples of each part, and that its price is around 50€ with key and audio, this app offers something quite valuable at a reasonably low price.
    • According to the authors, the exercises have been revised by specialists in Cambridge English exams, that is, English teachers mostly. By doing so, they have made sure that the level of each exercise is adequate.
    • You can use the app offline, wherever you are.

What I don’t like so much

Although most of it is very good, there are a few things I feel I should point out:

    • I don’t understand why there are 37 examples of parts 1, 2 and 3, but “only” 12 examples of part 4, especially given how difficult most candidates find this part.
    • The design is useful and it works out, but I feel a little more could have been done to make it look better, more inspired.
    • Something which I really think this app lacks is an explanation of the answers. While adding this feature must be tedious and far from easy, I believe users would really appreciate knowing why some of their answers where right or wrong. This is something I always look for in textbooks and I honestly hope this app includes it in future instalments.
    • Despite the fact that I think it is totally worth paying 9,99€ for this app, I think many people will find it expensive. Not because of the app itself, but because many mobile users don’t enjoy paying for a mobile app, let alone 9,99€. This is actually a problem of the users rather than the app itself, but I thought I’d mention it. Again, I think the price is more than fair.
    • Exercises are limited, meaning that once you’ve done them… that’s it! It’s like using an exams book. It would be wonderful if more exercises were added regularly. Maybe, instead of a one-time payment, a monthly subscription plan could be offered (something like 4,99€/month), adding a few exercises every week or month.

    Conclusion

Both CAE Academy and FCE Academy are really useful apps to improve your Use of English towards your First (FCE) or Advanced (CAE) exam. While some things may be improved, I completely recommend purchasing the full version for 9,99€. Here are my thoughts expressed as numbers:

    • Features: 8/10
    • Design: 6/10
    • Value for money: 9/10
    • Final score: 8/10

How about you, which apps do you use to learn English? Do you already use one to improve your Use of English? Let me know in the comments and tell me what you think of CAE Academy and FCE Academy.

And if you think this post was useful, share it with other English teachers and learners. And don’t forget to subscribe to the blog and follow us on Facebook TwitterPinterestInstagramGoogle+ & YouTube🙂

CAE Academy & FCE Academy Apps

    CAE Academy FCE ACademy

    • Part 1: Multiple choice cloze
    • Part 2: Open cloze
    • Part 3: Word transformation

CAE Academy FCE Academy apps 2

CAE ACADEMY FCE ACADEMY APP 3

    • Funcionalidades: 8/10
    • Diseño: 6/10
    • Calidad-precio: 9/10

How to teach a child to say “k”

This is the first in a series of posts about how to teach specific speech sounds.  Today we are going to start with the “c/k” and “g” sounds.  These are probably the sounds that I work on most often!

When should a child be able to say c/k and g?

It is very normal for young children to mispronounce these sounds.  The usual error is to say “t” in place of “c/k” and “d” in place of “g” (or sometimes “d” in place of both sounds).  So, for example, the child will say “tar” for “car” or “dame” for “game”.  This post assumes that this is the error that the child is making.  If your child is making a different error, please consult a speech and language therapist.

The “c/k”  and “g” sounds are usually correct by around 4 years.  Check out this post for more information about which sounds to expect when.  Since some children in the UK start Year R at the age of just 4, it is not unusual to have children starting school who are not yet saying these sounds correctly.

    When should I be concerned?

If you are concerned about a child’s speech, always consult a speech and language therapist.  However, here are some factors as well as age that might affect whether the child needs therapy or not:-

    • What error are they making?  If it is the usual pattern of replacing the sounds with “t” and “d” then I would be less concerned than if they are using a more unusual pattern such as “p” instead of “k”.
    • Are they using the sound in any words?  Can they use the sound at the beginning of words?  At the end?  In the middle?  Particularly take notice of blends (cl and cr).  I often come across children who are not using “c/k” most of the time, but can say “cl” in a word such as “clown”.
    • Is it just these sounds that the child is struggling with or is this part of a bigger problem?  Is the child difficult to understand?

How is a “c/k” or “g” sound produced?

These two sounds (and “ng” as in “long”) are the only speech sounds in English which are produced using the back part of your tongue.  You touch the back of your tongue to the back part of the roof of your mouth.

Stand in front of a mirror, open your mouth wide and say “c/k” – watch what your tongue is doing.  Knowing how a sound is made is really important in teaching someone how to do it themselves.

If a child is saying “t” or “d” instead, then they are making the sounds too far forward in their mouth.  They are raising their tongue tip and putting it on that ridgey bit at the front behind their teeth.

How can I teach a child to say these sounds?

Firstly, just a word of caution.  We are going to share some strategies to try to encourage a child to say these sounds.  Some children will be able to say a new sound really quickly with just a little bit of help.  Others need a lot more help.  If you are waiting for a speech therapy assessment, do lots of work on listening to the sounds first.  You can find out more about how to do this here and here.  If your child gets very good at this, then try some of the strategies below.  Do a session of just a couple of minutes 2 or 3 times.  If after that, your child is still struggling to say the single sound, please stop, and try again in a few months or wait for your speech therapy assessment.  It’s really important that your child doesn’t keep practising it wrongly or become too self-conscious about the way they speak.  Remember to keep any practise relaxed and fun.

When teaching a new sound, use as many different cues or ways to help as you can.  You can find out more about cueing here.  Give instructions for what you want them to do, show them, use a picture to represent the sound and use a gesture too.

    • The first thing I always do is to ask the child to “open your mouth really wide and say this sound, right at the back”.  Make sure they are watching you and show them – open your mouth really wide so that they can see your tongue.  For a few children, this is enough!
    • If they find this difficult, get them to look in a mirror so they can see what they are doing.  Ask them to keep their mouth open while they say the sound – often the child’s mouth will close as their tongue tip comes up to say “t”.  Praise all tries – this is something that is really hard! Do lots of sounds they can do too and praise those as well.
    • Finally, if your child is finding it really difficult to keep their tongue tip from lifting up, you could try asking them to use one or two fingers to hold it down.  Be very careful with this – just one or two fingers and not too far in!  The last thing we want is for them to gag or have their mouth so full of fingers that they can’t talk!  The idea is just to gently hold the tongue tip down.  I usually explain this to the child by asking them to “hold that wriggly tongue down with your finger”.  Show them by using your own fingers to hold your tongue tip down as you say the sound. If you are a parent or a member of school or nursery staff trying this for the first time, try it yourself on your own first in front of a mirror so that you really know what you are asking them to do and if you are at all unsure, please don’t do it – just stick with the other strategies!

Once your child is able to say the single sound, you need to start working towards putting the sound into words.  Make sure they can say the sound consistently on its own first without needing to use a finger to help.  There is more about the process of therapy in this post or you could check out our online course which has lots more information about everything in this post with videos, handouts and practical activities to complete.

Once your child is ready to practise words, do check out our pack of photo picture cards for practising k.  There are 104 picture cards for just £4.  You can find them in our shop.
